~~ ADD-IN FUNCTION to EFFECT SIGNIFICANT FIGURES ~~

The significant figures package includes a virtual basic add-in program for Excel which effortlessly formats numbers. I will also include, upon request, a non-virtual basic compound formula to accomplish the same. Applications include scientific, GMP laboratories, education, statistical applications.

As a [former] scientist, I needed to utilize significant figures yet Microsoft did not have this function available. In fact, there were no add-in functions even available by third parties when I decided to take it upon myself to produce the badly needed operation. It surprises me that there are even data handlers in the scientific field who use more digits than what is reasonable - this is a common occurrence and I say the malpractice should cease at once!

I recently checked out the competition and have found numerous errors in their formulas and one even caused Excel shutting down whenever trying to format cells. Get the best and original right here - I took great care to perform troubleshooting and the function will even work for negative numbers.

~~ ADD-IN FUNCTION to EFFECT ROBUST LINEAR REGRESSION ~~

robreg.xla: http://www.mediafire.com/?e08v2vhpld4vvir

The best fitting linear regression computation is just that: BEST-FITTING. No other regression line fits best, including the commonly used "least-squares" method. The line-fitting program which I am promoting topologically fits the regressed points for all defined slopes, i.e. if the set of points are rotated, the slope is rotated by the exact same degree of rotation. For the commonly used "least-squares" method, a rotation of the set of regressed point alters the slope in an unequal fashion, thus the line regressing the points differs topologically to the points and hence cannot be construed as a robust fitting. The method relies on minimizing the distances of points to a line and not just the y-residuals, so you can be certain the regressed line is robust. I can provide a one page document of the derivation of the formula upon request.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING ADD-IN FUNCTIONS

1. Copy the add-in function to any location on your hard drive. Suggested location would be to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Library.

2. On the Top Menu Bar of Excel, go to TOOLS|ADD-INS then click BROWSE to locate the placement of the add-in function.

3. Click "OK" and the function is now loaded.

The significant figures function is named "sigf". The slope and y-intercept functions for the robust linear regression are respectively, "tslope", and "tintercept".
